    Against Real Reform
The insincerity of Harry Reid’s calls for reform is established by his own words and actions. Although he received, and refuses to return, over $68,000 in Abramoff affiliated funds, Reid’s recent comments and blatant misuse of taxpayer funds demonstrate that he is the very sort of corrupt politician that needs to be removed from Washington.

So what does Harry Reid think about reform?

We know he claims that Abramoff is a Republican scandal.

We know he took over $68,000 from Abramoff affiliated clients and lobbyists and refuses to give it back.

We know his former legislative aide worked for Abramoff and held fundraisers for Reid in Abramoff offices.

We know Reid recently embarked on his hypocrisy tour, plugging reform.

But what does he really think?

Read the information below regarding Reid’s comments on a recent telephone conference call:

The Washington Note, a blog maintained by Steve Clemons, contains a reference to a conference call with Reid and bloggers. An excerpt from the blog follows:

That brings me to the phone encounter with Harry Reid, who was extremely forthcoming by the way. Among the matters he discussed were the Alito confirmation vote and hearing, his new proposal restricting any acceptance of lobbying gifts, the NSA wiretaps, and his Rule 21 effort to compel the Senate Intelligence Committee to move forward on its Phase 2 report.

Senator Reid shared with us that just that day an unnamed Democratic Senator had come to him with a proposal on "ethics reform" ala Abramoff that could be bi-partisan. Reid told this person that this was the wrong time to be engaged in construtive "reform" proposals with the other side. He said that this was the time to draw a line and to show how "our side" differed dramatically from "their side."

Not content to being opposed to real reform, Reid is using his taxpayer funded 'war room' to distribute his hollow claims for reform, running what is nothing more than a taxpayer funded campaign to prevent reform.

Cornyn Questions Ethics Of Taxpayer-Funded War Room 'Report'

Researching, compiling and distributing what amounts to nothing more than a campaign ad on the taxpayer's dime raises serious ethical questions'

    Wednesday, January 18, 2006

WASHINGTON—U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and a former Texas Attorney General and Supreme Court justice, made the following statement Wednesday regarding a taxpayer-funded political report by the Democrat war room:

“It is beyond ironic that in an attempt to smear the ethics of others, the Democrat ‘war room’ chose to use taxpayer-funded staff and equipment to compile a blatantly political attack on Republican Senators. Researching, compiling and distributing what amounts to nothing more than a campaign ad on the taxpayer’s dime raises serious ethical questions. Sen. Reid once chaired the Ethics Committee, he should know better.

“At a time when the Congress should be working together toward reform and safeguards against ethics violations, the Democrat leadership has instead chosen to run a political campaign out of the U.S. Capitol.

“If the Democrat leadership spent as much time working for America, and toward an agenda, they might actually stand for something other than personal attacks. And it would be a far wiser—and ethical—use of the taxpayer’s dollar.

Sen. Cornyn served previously as Texas Attorney General, Texas Supreme Court Justice, and Bexar County District Judge.
