  • Recent statements from Nevada’s embarrassing senior Senator, Harry Reid regarding pre-war intelligence reveal his and his fellow democrats fundamental ignorance of the rules relating to classified material and prove that he would rather perpetuate falsehoods than admit the fact that the democrat’s ‘real security’ is only a partisan attempt to secure power.

Democrats have no agenda other than to undermine our President in a time of war.  Because the facts are inconvenient, democrats prefer to live in a fantasy world wherein they can continue to repeat false and misleading statements rather than face reality.  Rather than rally to support the war effort, democrats work to actively undermine National Security while publicly professing to ‘support the troops.’

Prior to the vote on the war in Iraq, the entire classified National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) was made available to lawmakers in the Capitol Building.  Senator Reid could not be bothered to take the time to read that document but still voted for war.  When he sensed that the polls were shifting, he said he was misled and conveniently ignored his original refusal to read the NIE.

Joe Wilson writes an article on pre-war intelligence falsely asserting, in part, that he was sent on his mission by the Vice President and that Iraq never sought components for nuclear weapons.  The facts are that Wilson was selected for his ‘mission’ through the efforts of his wife, Valerie Plame, who worked for the CIA, not by the Vice President.  While, at some point in time, Plame may have been a covert agent, she had not been in that status for over 5 years before her name was ‘revealed’.

Wilson’s article was false in other respects as well.  In response to these false assertions, portions of the NIE were declassified in 2003 to counter the lies and provide a portion of the factual basis for the decision to go to war.  Even the Washington Post asserts that the President “was right to approve the declassification of parts of a National Intelligence Estimate about Iraq three years ago in order to make clear why he had believed that Saddam Hussein was seeking nuclear weapons. Presidents are authorized to declassify sensitive material, and the public benefits when they do.”  (Washington Post Editorial “A Good Leak” 4/9/06, http://tinyurl.com/nzcbc)

There are only two possible explanations for the democrat’s feigned outrage: Reid and other democrats do not understand the powers and role of the executive branch OR they are deliberately misleading the American people about National Security issues to gain a partisan advantage; either way, democrats continue to demonstrate that they cannot be trusted with national security.
